What does being “psychic” actually mean? In my experience there are very few people who are not psychic but such is the way of the world that this faculty is suppressed in most people at a very young age. The word psychic is also now a rather overused and much misunderstood word, but it’s the best we’ve got to describe a range of experiences and abilities which loosely allude to things not apparent to the five sense reality of our physical existence. If you can’t hear it, see it, taste it, touch it or smell it, it doesn’t exist. Or so we’re taught to believe.

What is known as psychic ability is really part of awareness and like all other abilities it is available to everyone. Whether you develop it or not is up to each of us, and how we use it is unique. But it’s like a muscle, the more you use it the better it gets.

I prefer use of the word “intuitive” as this describes more accurately being “taught from within”, meaning we receive knowledge from some point within our own awareness, even if we’re not consciously aware of it. The key to intuition is the willingness to listen and the patience to know that information doesn’t always come on demand. Information from another dimension tends to come on a need to know basis rather than when we want it, which can be very annoying. It depends on the circumstances but as a rule of thumb, when you need an immediate answer to a pressing question and there’s just a blank, the guidance is to let go of the question. In doing this you surrender the issue and can become present again. The mind becomes quiet. The issue hasn’t just gone away, it’s been sent out to the greater field of awareness where it can be dealt with and its resolution can be revealed in quite unexpected and often miraculous ways.

We are surrounded by a limitless field of intelligence that is there at our disposal, if only we can learn to trust It, love It, and work with It, for we are not separate and we are never alone.

The difficulty for most of us is that, faced with dilemmas for which we seek guidance, the emotional component involved clouds the issue and there is a sense of overwhelm of fear or excitement or other strong feelings to which the mind becomes attached. Confronted with something that feels contentional, emotions surface from nowhere and confusion reigns. When that happens to you, really allow yourself to register the fact and avoid making decisions or commitments. The old saying “ships come in on a calm sea” rings true and at this point it is better to be completely noncommittal until the emotional storm subsides. Intuition, like a ship, does better on a calm sea so delay making choices and decisions until that sense of calm prevails. A calm sea is a quiet mind.

In other situations intuition can be instant but doesn’t make sense given the current circumstances. There is a tendency to overthink and rationalize the pros and cons when guidance from within has already been as clear as a bell. The trouble is we ignore it in favour of group thinking or cultural demands or what someone else thinks is right – and to our cost. Only in hindsight do we say “I knew it right at the beginning but just didn’t follow what I knew”. Who doesn’t know that scenario. The linear mind only knows what it knows; intuition is capable of tuning into what is unknown and this is the difference.

Your intuition is as personal to you as your own health, and just as, over time you work out what is helpful to your physical body and what is detrimental, so you can learn to get to know how your personal intuition operates. For many it’s just a sense of knowing and for some there will be a physical sensation when intuition is at work. We must not confuse intuition with belief for intuition will often guide us in the opposite direction to what our belief systems or desires tell us. This brings a conundrum for many because the mind is conditioned from a very early age and until we learn otherwise we operate from belief systems that are built into the hard drive and when we get an intuitive hit that doesn’t align with these, it’s all too easy to dismiss it.

Intuition is not conditional and doesn’t give a fig about what goes on in your conditioned mind. Intuition, although affecting matters of a material nature, does not always come from the material plane. Ultimately it comes from the heart center and connects to frequency bands that exist beyond the physical world. The five sense reality of the physical world occupies a very narrow band of frequency and this is where we mostly hold our focus, but awareness is boundless and we can train our focus of attention to extend beyond the physical into that limitless field.

A lot of pain can be avoided if we listen to our intuition because we all have it. Reflect back on some of the so-called “mistakes” that have occurred over the years and see if you can track back to a moment when intuition was telling you something that you ignored. It is that still, small voice within that will give you that “funny feeling”, whether it’s about your life or someone else’s. Ultimately of course, there are no mistakes because we learn from everything.

Many clients come to me because they’re torn between what looks right and what intuitively feels right with regard to a particular course of action so we have to explore what’s going on at a deeper level. Usually following the intuitive course looks more difficult on the face of it because some kind of personal change is required and we do like our comfort zones. My job is to help open the intuitive channels and allow guidance to bring a broader understanding of what it is we truly want to do and take the first steps in bringing it to fruition. So often the needs and desires of others and our own trepidation muddy the waters of intuition and that’s when we need someone else to see clearly for us. We all need encouragement!

Let’s make this a year of living intuitively, allowing old, outworn and rigid belief systems to stand aside and invite our internal tuition to step forward. It’s always there, we don’t have to pay for it, compete for it or take exams! It is a supply that will never run out and is a gift to us all.
