The word surrender does not mean to give in, or give up. It means to give forth whatever the issue or problem to the god or deity of your highest understanding with complete faith that Divine power itself is able to resolve the dilemma. If you just sit down and do nothing universal energy will do the same. If you fight and drive yourself into a frenzy of conflict you will cut yourself off from any guidance or intuition that would come to you in a helpful way and exhaust yourself in the process.
Surrender is not a passive stance. It is a deliberate and conscious action which demands an open heart and an intentional declaration that the Presence receive the issue at hand and deal with it. True surrender is always followed by a sense of quiet in the mind and peace in the heart. At this point there may be a flood of understanding and guidance or, quite simply, an extended lightness of being may prevail as well as a sense of relief that only the present moment is real, and a feeling of contentment that goes alongside this realization.
True surrender is not always easily understood. Even if you can grasp the concept, unconscious fears and resistances often arise unbidden that muddy the waters and defeat the object. People often only surrender at times of dire need as if by relflex action against the overwhelming feelings of fear or rage or other hard emotion that engulfs them. Rigid thinking does the same thing, blocking the clear channel of communication that exists between the Self and that which is Divine.
Surrender requires awareness. As you are aware that you are petitioning for help and giving forth the issue, so you are aware that your plea is acknowledged. The connection between the human and the Divine is ever present even though the world you look at might tell you otherwise.
There is indeed much ill-will in your world but it is mostly generated by humankind, both knowingly and unknowingly. For too long those with good hearts and intentions have stood by, unable to act against the agents of wickedness due to lack of understanding and an erroneous sense of powerlessness. If you want to change the world you must first elevate your own world by embracing your connection to the Divine consciously, fully understanding that you are not separate from that which creates you and loves you beyond measure.
All genuine spiritual masters have understood clearly what surrender actually means but despite their entreaties and the wisdom of their words, not enough individuals heed their teachings. Very few cultures embrace true spirituality, and it is mostly the efforts of individuals who have plowed a lonely path to find it for themselves and share it. The collective culture in which you live pays lip service to matters pertaining to God which is wholly detrimental to society. Who Am I? is the most simple and yet the most important question any human can ask because it sets the tone for your whole life. You may live in circumstances that are humble or diminished in some way and yet experience inner peace and contentment, or live a life of apparent bounty where you experience little peace or deep love. Either attitude depends upon your viewpoint which is shaped by your inner experience and deep sense of who you are.
The Kingdom of God lies within. You have the right and the freedom to find it and if you do so, the guidance will always be there.
