NOTES FROM THE CREON – June, 2022

If you want your world to change just changing your perceptions of it is not enough. Whether it is the world “out there” or the world “in here” the same applies as the root of the problem lies with who you think you are. Your so called perceptions depend upon your answer to this question, for the truth is that your thinking mind will dominate your sense of self and give you ideas about who and what you think you are, and from that will stem all the judgements, opinions and reactions that you have.


Ego is mind and mind is ego. Ego is necessary to a point for human survival depends upon the wise use of mind, but ego should not be confused with pride which is always some form of self importance. For as long as you retain the belief that you are this person or that person you will be in bondage to the mind and enslaved to the sense of time through which the effects of human thinking take place.


We do not tell you to stop thinking because you need to use your thinking mind to drive the practical matters of your daily existence, but rather we encourage you to explore the truth that who you truly are is not your mind. Humans think the same thoughts day in day out until the realization comes that this is not only unnecessary but also undesirable. There is a deep desire buried in most humans to become free of the entrapment of the thinking-feeling mechanism that propels you through life with all the toils and troubles it brings.


Who Am I is a good question to ask yourself. As a thought arises, ask yourself “am I this thought” and “who is having this thought”. Then you begin to see that the thought is just that, it is not who you are and in seeing this clearly there is no longer a need to cleave to it so fiercely, believing it is an expression of your identity that you would defend to the death. It is just a thought, but the inability to separate it from the true sense of Self is what keeps you trapped.


If you reflect back on your life you will see that some of your happiest moments have occurred when you have felt comfortable with the present moment, when you have not felt particularly needy or conflicted. You may believe it was because the circumstances of your life at that time were favourable, but the truth is that your mind was not bothering you too much and you were experiencing a lighter sense of beingness.


Consciousness is constantly on the move and changing, but who you are is eternally the same point of observation that, just by the nature of its being, is always full and seeks nothing. It is the mind and the body that seek. You can see this for yourself as you reflect back over your life and realise that there has been only one constant factor in it – and that is you, the witness of all your experience and the observer of what is at any given moment.


As we have said before, the mind itself is the instrument of addiction and the only rehabilitation on offer is the willingness to observe its activities with detachment and compassion. When a troubling thought arises ask yourself immediately – do I need to have that thought, and what does it do for me? Don’t try to suppress your thinking, have the courage to observe it and at that point you can let it move on.


The human mind is trained to judge, whether it is yourself, another person or a situation that you find wanting, judgement is an ingrained habit. All emotional states stem from some form of judgement and are usually followed by a desire for a quick cure or rearrangement of the circumstances which are not to your liking. The more able you are, regardless of circumstance, to take the position of observer, the easier it is to establish a quiet mind through which right guidance and action can flow.


Who you truly are is a point of consciousness which exists in an unlimited field of awareness. The past has disappeared and the future does not exist. Your memories are always biased one way or another and your hopes and dreams are just that, hopes and dreams. The “I” in the middle of all this is what is real and expresses itself freely when all the mental chatter and personality identifications are gone. A free spirit functions best through a clear mind and this is where happiness lies.
