Whatever you are feeling and thinking will color the energy field, and much of these thoughts and feelings occur at a subliminal level. It isn’t possible, using force, to change thoughts and feelings for very long, and although the use of affirmations can do much to alleviate psychological pain in the moment, it does not reach the deeper levels of the mind. It is normal within the human psyche to avoid looking at painful thoughts and feelings, let alone how to question their validity in a beneficial way. When pain arises from the psyche it is a normal reaction to avoid or suppress it by finding distractions of one sort or another. This is the usual pattern and it too comes from training.
A different approach to avoidance is, to face into whatever discomfort you are feeling. As thoughts emerge, usually accompanied by long held memories of similar unpleasant experiences, rather than going into the story and listening to the running commentary that the thinking mind will bring up, take a deep breath and mentally step aside so that you can observe the thoughts that are coming up. In taking this position you become the witness to the drama rather than its main character and even though you will also observe the pain that goes with it you will not be so overwhelmed.
Human life for the most part is not easy, even from childhood. Most people have unpleasant memories of hurt, pain, vulnerability and so on which although they may not choose to bring to the forefront of the mind, will nevertheless appear unbidden when circumstances occur to create the same feelings. Your mind is conditioned from very early on in life and then, for the most part, you reinforce that conditioning by continuing to think and react in the same way to both internal and external forces. You have very little power to change this dynamic until you can see clearly how your own mind operates.
There is no good or bad, right or wrong about this – thinking and feeling is simply that. Freedom from mental entrapment requires a different approach and a willingness to face mental pain, in the moment, and to see it for what it is.
As you take a witness position you become the observer and if you stay with this long enough you will discover that who you truly are is not the sum total of your thoughts, feelings, reactions and memories. Who you really are is the observer of your life and dwelling quietly in the observer position you experience a sense of quietude, safety and love. Love for Self is natural and necessary and is a gift. At the deepest level you wish yourself well. When the mind becomes quiet and empty, all you know for certain is that you just are. I Am. The I Am in every individual is the true self, that which was never born and never dies, that is part of Source and can never be separated.
Spiritual freedom takes practice and self discipline. For most it also takes a yearning to accomplish, a great desire to move to a place of awareness and innocence. To become free of the mental and emotional narrative is to be free of the ego which on its own desires dominance and survival. When the heart is having trouble the mind will step in and try to control, until it learns not to. For many, the mind is like water – throw a pebble into a pond and the water is immediately disturbed. The mind should be like honey, smooth and difficult to disturb.
The more you are able to dwell in present moment awareness the less disturbance you feel. It becomes easier to withdraw from painful memories when they arise and indeed the less interesting these memories become. The more at one you feel with all of life and all its circumstances the easier it becomes to forgive, or give forth, the pains and hardships that have assailed you.
There is always a guiding hand and at times of confusion, ask for its help. When you step aside from the mental drama that has appeared you don’t even need to ask because that help is always there and freely given, but if your faith falters in the moment, just ask.
As you stand aside and observe your mind, meet the mental dramas with compassion and indeed humour. You will eventually see it as a stage show and while the drama plays itself out on the stage you are sitting comfortably in the audience. When painful events occur don’t be afraid to feel the pain and let it work its own way out through you. Bring comfort to yourself and accept it from others. If you are willing to stay with the pain as witness to it, it will be much easier to bear and will pass more quickly. You don’t need to add it to the list of previous painful memories which you becoming free of, or use it as a reason to have all sorts of judgements which you now know are untrue.
There is no competition, no race to win, and no accounting for good deeds or bad actions. There is no vengeful god waiting to test you or judge you – the only being who judges you is yourself. These things are fictions passed down from generation to generation based on misunderstanding in some cases and the desire to control in others.
The deep, timeless inner space within is the true you, not the thoughts and feelings you have, and if you will understand and accept that you are perfect as you are, the false arguments of the mind will slip away.
