It is easy to talk about having a quiet mind but not so easy to accomplish. To quieten the mind the best thing to do is to bring attention to the breathing. Take several deep, slow breaths and notice that as you do this your mind will automatically become quieter.
In most people the mind is overactive and, as we have said before, the mind is an instrument of addiction thus constant mental activity is an addiction in itself. Very few of your thoughts are truly purposeful and in times of stress or too many external demands, this heightened mental activity will take you away from yourself and leave you feeling tired and disconnected. Humans today are more subject to external pressure than they have probably ever been and it is critical for mental and physical health to find ways to effortlessly calm the mind.
It is advisable to use technology with thoughtfulness for we see so many of our friends aimlessly reaching for devices that will only increase the sense of mental distraction and disengagement. This in turn leads to feelings of disconnectedness and disatisfaction, as if you are separate from your body and your immediate environment.
The more Present you are the more at ease you will feel. In turn the breathing becomes smoother and deeper and, no matter what current conditions surround you, there is a greater chance of feeling calm and untroubled.
A quiet mind is a mind without superficial judgment. This does not mean you should not assess situations that need your attention nor consider the decisions you need to make in your daily life. You are taught almost from birth to judge and assume your judgments are correct, without any investigation at all. Even a baby will judge that hunger is unpleasant, that warmth is pleasant and so on, and then react to those judgments with expressions of joy or fear. To be able to observe a situation without the burden of judgment leaves you free to see something exactly for what it is, untroubled by the emotions that automatically lead to judgment.
As you age your judgments become more complicated and sophisticated as the brain develops and the child grows into an adult. Now the judgments become more specific as the ego is forming and will create the bedrock of the adult personality. This is when judgment becomes automatic and left unchallenged will become your ruler. Your world is as it is because of collective judgment. We do not say that you have all asked for the conditions that exist on your planet or agree that they are right or desirable. Our point here is to demonstrate that when the mind is in judgment, Beingness is not present.
It is in a state of Presence, which is also Awareness, that the energy of the heart and soul arise. It is in this state that you are who you truly are and can experience with joy the love that you are. The Mind, because of its conditioning, doesn’t like this very much and will leap in to distract you and occupy you with thoughts that are mostly uncreative, so it is important to understand how this dynamic works and therefore overcome the addiction. All it takes is a willingness to observe what happens within when it is happening. The way you think is a habit. At times when you are able to break this habit you find that creative energy is more readily at your disposal as deeper fears and prejudices begin to abate.
We do not ask you to perform some sort of spiritual gymnastics as what we suggest is very simple. You cannot change your mind even if you wanted to and trying to force yourself to think and feel differently is not desirable. Through no fault of your own you have been conditioned to think as you do and the first step to a great enlightenment is to understand this.
Every soul has its own personality and unique set of life circumstances but will still be affected by collective thought and the cultural and educational norms of the day. For some it is a harder battle than for others, but for all souls the spiritual principles are the same.
The more you practise being Present the quieter your mind will be and the less interesting its current preoccupations will be. Even if you do this just for a few moments you will benefit. In those moments you will feel like yourself which is how you should feel, and can simply be yourself, which is the happiest way to be. You are not required to add anything or change anything about yourself because you are whole exactly as you are. It is not a case of developing something, it is a case of letting go that which is inauthentic and not truly of yourself, which can only be a relief.
Who you are is Love itself, expressing in myriad ways. It is your purpose to be alive and, in your current earthly life, to experience a sense of autonomy. You can never be separated from Source as you are that part of Source choosing to express as human. In quiet moments the Presence you feel is the presence of Source Itself and there is no separation.
There is no goal to be reached, no exam to take, no teacher to be satisfied. You already are and have all the things you crave at your deepest level and all you need to know is that what these things truly are lies way beyond the chattering content of your mind. All we recommend is that you pause for a few moments and put your attention on your breathing. Take a few deliberate, deep, slow breaths and notice how you feel. You can do this anytime and in any place. If you are reading this it is because you are tired of mental clutter and want to dive into your own pure Beingness and feel the bliss that this has to offer. Go there often.
